Owner, Three Sisters Studio
I grew up in a home overflowing with music. Music is the connection to some of my most vivid memories, and, when I was little, my two sisters were key players in creating those memories. We shared a Hardy Boys record player that was always spinning something: ABBA, The Bee Gees, The Grease soundtrack, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Queen. The first vinyl record I ever bought with my own money—at eight years old—was Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' I Love Rock 'n Roll. I thought she was incredible, and I still do. I’ve seen her live a few times, and she’s every bit as cool and powerful as I imagined back when I was a kid! As my sisters and I got older and outgrew the Hardy Boys, we upgraded to a boom box, then a Walkman, and eventually to smartphones and home speakers — each shift bringing new tunes and new memories.
As a kid, I played the violin and piano, which were fine, but by ten, I knew I wanted to play the drums. My mom said no, insisting that “girls don’t play drums.” Even as a little kid, I knew that was total B.S! (If you ask her about it now she says she was just sick of me flip-flopping from instrument to instrument every year!). Regardless, that frustration simmered in me for 30 years until, at 40, I finally decided to take drum lessons. And while I wouldn’t call myself a prodigy, playing the drums makes me feel fierce!
Throughout my life, music remained a constant, always playing a big part in fueling my creativity and deepening my connections with friends. I met my husband in college, and music was at the heart of our time together with our friends —whether we were at parties, swapping CDs, or singing the last song before the bars closed, music defined our time together.
My husband and I shared our love for music with our three daughters ensuring they got a proper “rock-ducation”. We quizzed them on who was singing every time a new song came on the car radio, and we took them to their first concert to see The Who when they were 6, 8, and 10 years old. Along the way, we’ve introduced new artists to eachother, bridging generations of music—a pretty awesome perk! We encourage them to discover their own favorites, sometimes that’s Fleetwood Mac and sometimes it’s Laundry Day, because we know those are the songs that will become the soundtrack to their lives.
In recent years, my focus has shifted to Three Sisters Studio (named for my sisters and the three girls I’ve raised). The signs I create are my way of bringing music into our lives in a tangible form—something you can see and touch; a physical reminder of the music we love. The love I have for a song, an artist, or a lyric is too special to just hear; I want to see it and hold it in my hands! So I designed personalized music decor for listening rooms and bookshelves, practice spaces and home studios, because I know that the memories of spinning vinyl records, attending concerts, and belting out tunes with friends in crowded bars are shared by music lovers everywhere!
